Services: Construction

A single apartment block along Childers Street in Deptford contains 83 apartments over six floors, clustered around a central atrium space. The project had a budget of £17.8m and was built using a reinforced concrete frame structure.

The original building was built in the 1920's as a ship's propeller foundry. The retained front facade integrates the building with the street scene, and the new floors above were sensitively detailed to blend into the elevation.

The facade required the construction of a temporary steel supporting frame, and carefully detailed junctions between the new and existing brickwork.

The atrium posed a significant challenge throughout the project, creating a complex fire strategy. Avebury collaborated with both NHBC building control and the local planning authority to achieve a workable solution which satisfied both parties, while minimsing the cost to the client.
